Description

Afterplace is an adventurous retro game for those who like to get lost. It's a huge open world, full of hidden secrets, treasures, and creatures. Explore the woods, fight monsters, talk to ostensibly shady characters, walk away from those characters mid-conversation (if you want to), and get so lost you fall out of the world entirely (and maybe even into another). You never know what the forest might be hiding, and not all trails are paved. Labyrinths and dungeons are tucked away in the most concealed nooks. There are no waypoints in Afterplace. You'll have to forge your own path.

Afterplace strives to bring an experience that feels both small and immense at the same time. The game has simple, fluid controls, allowing you to focus on exploration and discovery. Characters are happy to chat - or you can run right past them! You get to choose what story to explore, if any at all (we are not responsible for the consequences of ignoring the story, whatever they may be).

  • About 10 hours of unique gameplay (and much more if you lose your way)

  • No overworld map

  • An open world that lets you explore any path in any order

  • Tons of friends, enemies, and at least one frenemy

  • The ability to upgrade weapons, purchase armor, and ingest hazardous chemicals to increase your power

  • Okay maybe there is an overworld map

  • Multiple endings, decided by choices you probably don't even know you're making

  • Like 25 unique enemies? That's a lot, right?

  • Wait, no, this overworld map is written on a napkin with crayon. That won't do.

  • Secret paths that will take you to completely normal and fun places

  • A cat that you can pet. With your sword.

  • The 25 unique monsters are really special though. They have sparkling personalities, and aren't like other monsters.

  • At least two overworld maps.

About the Author:

Afterplace was made entirely by Evan Kice, a former software engineer from Austin, TX. He quit his job in 2019 to work on the game full-time. Originally released on mobile in 2022, Afterplace brought an actual indie experience to a platform better known for handholding and microtransactions.

Evan continues to support and polish Afterplace on PC, where it remains unique: a handcrafted world with no handholding, hundreds of hidden scenes, and countless surprises depending on who you talk to (and how often you do). No two playthroughs will ever be the same.

Intriguing little experience. Very exploration-heavy adventure game, with lots of simplistically beautiful scenery and chockfull of lovely and witty characters. The combat is by no means hard. There have been only few sections I considered challenging, but all bosses can easily be done first try. That could have been a bit cranked up in my opinion. Exploring a beautiful little open world with almost no guidance is

This game is sick, and deserves so much more recognition, ever moreso for being a solo endeavour! Zelda meets Yume Nikki in this mysterious adventure game littered with interactions with charming characters who's fates are sometimes determined by your actions. There is a lot to chew on in this game and I'm not finished with it yet, I just want this to get the overwhelmingly positive status on Steam that it so

Short and sweet little indie game, enjoyed it enough to finish one ending in pretty much 2 sessions, the later of which I was exited to get back into after doing work. It's not a very complex game, the combat is pretty simple and there isn't really much in the way of changing it up through progression, rather simple but it's not clunky and it doesn't overstay its welcome to the point that it becomes a bad thing.
